Dec 04, 2015 From my knowledge of how transmissions work reverse is not synchronized so if you are rolling it will grind. I dont think I have ever tried to put it in reverse while rolling. I think your transmission is fine. The clunking you hear when you put it in gear is the drive line slap. Its common.

Apr 28, 2012 My second gear keeps grinding when i upshift from 1st but not when I downshift. If I shift really slow and carefully and let the rpms go back to idle while shifting it doesnt grind. Its the only gear that does it and its driving me nuts. Also the shifter seems to pull a little to the right in order to settle in to gear.

If you are grinding reverse gears it means the gearbox also known as a transmission has not fully disengaged from the engine and the gears are still rotating. One trick to eliminate the problem is to momentarily shift into a forward gear before quickly shifting into reverse.

Pretty much the only way to fix it is to pull the gearbox and either replace it with an overhauled one or strip it and replace the syncros.
